Something Ancient Is Coming to Whitehaven

There are some drinks that feel older than the bottle they come in. Mead is one of them. Long before distilleries, long before cellars full of barrels, there was honey and time and the quiet knowledge that something wonderful happened when the two were left together. It is one of the oldest fermented drinks in human history — and it is about to find a new home on the Cumbrian coast.
We have been working on something a little different here at Stanaways. Our Traditional Cumbrian Mead is crafted right here in Whitehaven, made with locally sourced honey and guided by traditional fermentation techniques that have changed very little over the centuries. That is not nostalgia for its own sake — it is a recognition that some methods earn their staying power. The result is a drink with a character all of its own: the natural sweetness of the honey, a gentle depth that builds slowly, and a warmth that feels genuinely suited to this time of year.
Autumn is the right season for a mead to arrive. The light has shifted, the coast is quieter, and there is something in the air that makes you want to slow down and pay attention to what is in your glass. Mead rewards exactly that kind of attention. It is not a spirit to rush, and it is not one to compete with the louder flavours on your shelf. It takes its time, and it is better for it.
At Stanaways, we have always believed that the best spirits carry a sense of place — that what surrounds the distillery finds its way into what comes out of it. The Whitehaven coast, the Cumbrian fells, the sharp northern air: these things are part of what we make, even when we do not say so outright. Our Traditional Cumbrian Mead is no different. It belongs here, and we think you will feel that when you taste it.
We are not ready to put it in your hands just yet. But we are close — and it is worth the wait.
Keep an eye on stanaways.com — our Traditional Cumbrian Mead will be with you before the year is out.
