Something Is Waiting in the Rackhouse

There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over a rackhouse. It is not emptiness. It is the quiet of things taking their time — of wood swelling and contracting with the seasons, of spirit slowly finding its character in the dark. If you have ever stood in one, you will know what we mean. If you have not, this is us telling you that something worth knowing about is happening in ours.

Stanaways Craft Distillery has always been rooted in Whitehaven and the Cumbrian coast. That geography is not a backdrop — it is an ingredient. The sea air off the Solway Firth, the long cold winters, the particular quality of light that comes off the water on a clear autumn morning: these things find their way into what we make. They always have. And now they are finding their way into something new.

Our Single Barrel Whisky is maturing in oak right now, in the rackhouse here in Whitehaven. It is 46% ABV, and when it is ready it will carry a smooth, honeyed finish with whispers of peat and a maritime influence that could only have come from here. We are not going to tell you when it will be ready, because we do not rush these things. The barrel decides that, and we trust the process.

What we can tell you is what has gone into it: the same discipline, the same respect for craft, the same sense of place that runs through everything we produce at Stanaways. We have our copper pot stills and our rackhouse and a stretch of Cumbrian coastline that has been shaping spirits in one form or another for a very long time. The whisky is in good hands — and in good air.

We will say when it is time. Until then, keep an eye on stanaways.com.

The barrel is doing the work. We will let you know when it is done.
